Why?

First let me show you another photo from my wonderful walk with my MOM on Monday.
Isn’t that beautiful?  The water flowing free and even though it is winter and the trees are bare and the earth is covered with decaying leaves there is beauty all around me.  But just up the river a ways we came up this…

Do you see all those plastic bottles and bags, Styrofoam and trash of all kinds?

WHY?

See last spring and summer in Northern Utah we had A LOT of rain and the rivers swelled and overflowed the banks.  Now that the water levels are now contained in the banks all the garbage that was tossed aside, along roads, walkways, and paths, have now been washed together in pools along the river.  It saddens me and it literally brings tears to my MOM’s eyes.  When the weather gets warmer you can bet my MOM will bring me back to this spot to wade into the water to gather up this unsightly and sinful mess.  And maybe we will get that bra out of the tree as well.
Because we are created in God’s image, God gave us a privileged place among all creation and creatures and commanded us to exercise stewardship over the earth. (Psalm 8:6-8).  Stewardship implies caretaking, not abusing. We are to intelligently manage the resources God has given us, using all diligent care to preserve and protect.
God has given us all we need to live and survive.  God also decorated the planet in glorious color and scenic beauty to appeal to our aesthetic sense and thrill our souls with wonder!  We should be doing all we can to be true stewards of God's creation.

This is a photo of a backpacking trip MOM and I took high in the Uintas.  And this is a mountain lake that was as pure as the moment God created it.

When through the woods and forest glades and wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;
Then my soul begins to sing, How Great Thou Art.
Blessings,
Goose

  1. We try to take garbage out when we see it on our hikes, too. It's sad that people take such poor care of our land! There are some beautiful sights to see if you open your eyes and look.

    Even though we lives in the middle of no where there is trash in our river too. It makes our hearts sad that people's can not see the beauty around them.

  3. Bring lots of friends with trash bags & make it a party! Offer a prize for the most unique piece of trash/treasure that is discovered.

    Be careful that there is no broken glass or discarded needles!

  19. Thank you so much for making a donation to help Violet. I'm sorry the photo didn't show up. If you're on Facebook you can see LOTS of photos and updates on her under the Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue. She seems like such a sweet girl, I sure hope she makes it through all this.

  21. If everyone would just pick up a few pieces of litter every time they are out...imagine the difference. Better yet (momma fumes) if people would learn this wonderful world is not a trash bin for those too lazy to clean up after themselves...but don't get her started. Thanks, Goose and mom, for doing your part to make the world a better place.

  22. Oh Goose, we understand your sadness about the trash in the river. My mom actually works for an organization that protects the Chicago River. It's a very different kind of river, but still deserves to be protected. It's so very upsetting that people are so careless and cruel to the earth.

  23. I feel the same way that you do. We live in a miraculously gorgeous world, and we must take care of it. I get so upset when I see people abusing it... but I try to do my part to clean up after them. Alas, some things can't be fixed... like the many aspen saplings that were killed by someone with a hatchet in the forest near my house last year. I wept for them.

    But, I do believe that the number of people who have realized the beauty of the world and the need to take care of it is growing. That's the good news.

  25. WOW! Goose, you get some good, beautiful walks in, my friend. I hated to see the pictures of all the trash. The seeing beautiful piece of that is in the collecting and cleaning piece.

    Happy seeing beautiful!

  30. Man, the area you and your mom live in is SO beautiful, and yet it's so polluted with all of the trash and garbage! :( That is the saddest thing I've ever seen! I hope that the people in your area (and across the world) start treating Mother Nature better soon!
