Tomato Pickin' 101

Hello Friends.

Some of you may know that my MOM plants for me my very own tomato plant.  Yep just for me.  I get to pick my very own tomatoes whenever I want.  This is something I do not take lightly.  I know that one must take care of their plants in order for them to grow and produce.  So join, me won't you, as I show you how to take care of your very own tomato plant.

There she is my friends, my tomato plant.  Isn't she beautiful?  MOM plants flowers around my tomato plant.  Not only does it look pretty but the bees love the flowers and we all know bees are VERY important and helpful to helping all plants be all they can be.  (No pun intended, OK maybe it was intended)

One of the things I do is to check to make sure my tomato plant has the proper moister level.  This is very important.  Just as you and I need water to survive so do plants.  It is important that it is just the right amount.  Plus I get the added bonus of sniffin' the beautiful flowers.
"Hello my delicious beauty, I see you."
Then I check to see if any tomatoes are ripe.  You might think I don't know the difference, butt I do.  I never pick or eat a green tomato.  AND I NEVER eat the leaves.
This one looks like it is perfect and ready to meet my lips and stomach.
I then go in gently.  This is important.  I do not want to harm the rest of my plant.
Reward is mine.  Yummmmmmmm.  Just about nothing beats a freshly picked and eaten tomato.
And that my friends is how you pick your own tomatoes.  Follow these simple rules and you will feast all summer long.
OH! And check this out.  My MOM and her young friend Oscar pick all this yummy goodness on Sunday.  2 different kinds of Kale, Radishes, Summer Squash, Bell Peppers, Chili Peppers, Beets, Lettuce, Jalapenos, Zucchinis.

  1. Thank you for the important lesson Goose. Momma planted one tomato plant and I can't wait to follow your instructions.

Your momma must have a wonderful green thumb to grow all those goodies!

  10. Bro, you have the green thumb... even without having thumbs! I had a tomato plant too, there was one red thingy on it, called The Ugly Tom. I couldn't eat him and he is still in my freezer :o) It's great how much tasty things Oscar and your mom got from your garden!

  11. It's so amazing how you can pick that little tomato without hurting the rest of the plant. We don't think we could do that.

  12. Dad keeps our tomatoes fenced or Hazel would eat them all. But I got to go in the other day when dad was weeding and he watched as I sniffed at the green ones then moved on till I found a ripe one!

  20. ha ha ha I had several tomato plants on the deck 2 summers ago and Miss Lola learned how to help herself quite nicely.

  21. Wow. You are quite the gardener. What did your mom do with that big harvest???

  22. Wow, you are one lucky dude, Goose! And you really know how to be gentle with your tomato plant. Unfortunately for us, we can't grow tomatoes unless we have a greenhouse (and even that is dicey). Butt, my dogs know how to pick wild raspberries as gently as you pick your tomatoes!

  23. Wow, Goose, what a great gardener you are! You picking technique is perfect. BOL

Say, when you see Bert again would you ask him a question for me? We're hosting Safety Week in August and way back in Oct of 2011 we did the same thing and Bert did an amazing job of posting about search and rescue. I know he doesn't really blog anymore, but I was hoping he'd consider reposting (copy/paste maybe) his info. It was probably the most amazing and helpful part of the event in 2011 and would be so great to share again. Do you mind asking him if he'd consider doing this for us? If he would be willing, all he would have to do is put the post up again on 8-15-14. That's it. No other work involved.
If you'd rather not ask, or he'd rather not do the post, that's perfectly fine. No problem.

    Grr and Woof,
